Transport in the North West - Connecting people and places
Please note Regional Strategies / Regional Spatial Strategies were revoked with immediate effect on 6th July 2010. |
The Regional Transport Strategy is contained within the former Regional Spatial Strategy but incorporates much more than policies which focus specifically on roads, railways, ports and airports. The spatial principles and the regional and sub-regional spatial frameworks and sub-regional policies are also critical.
Within that context the key objectives are to:
- maintain our existing transport infrastructure
- improve journey time reliability, tackle congestion and overcrowding in the region's main transport corridors
- secure a shift towards the use of more sustainable modes of transport
- secure safe and efficient access between residential areas and key destinations including schools, employment, shops and other services
- improve surface access and interchange arrangements at the international, national and regional gateways
- reduce the adverse impacts of transport, in terms of safety hazards, climate change, environmental degradation, residential amenity and social exclusion
- integrate the management and planning of transport systems
