4NW receives a Commendation for its work on Regional Spatial Planning at Royal Town Planning Institute North West Planning Achievement Awards for 2010

On Friday 3^rd December 2010, 4NW received recognition for its achievements on Regional Spatial Planning over the last decade, when it received a Commendation in the prestigious RTPI North West Planning Achievement Awards for 2010.

In making the Commendation to 4NW for 'Regional Spatial Planning - A Decade of Achievement', the Judging Panel stated:

"The first version of Regional Planning Guidance for the North West, issued in 1996, was prepared by a small group of professionals working with various local authorities in the Region. 

A full time planning team was established at the newly created North West Regional Assembly to prepare a new version of Regional Planning Guidance (RPG13).  This was the first dedicated full time team to be set up to work on RPG outside the South East.  Subsequently, similar teams were established in other regions based on the pioneering model developed in the North West. 

With the support of Central Government funding, the North West team expanded to include housing, transport, sustainable development and other professionals as its remit was broadened to cover a wider range of strategic issues. 

The make-up of the team has changed over the years to reflect the changing remits and scope of work undertaken by the former North West Regional Assembly and its successor 4NW - the Regional Leaders Board, which was established in 2008. 
All of the Judges were impressed by both the quality and quantity of work that was generated by 4NW, together with the professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff.  The loss of the regional tier of government is a very sad episode and it leaves a very sour taste in the mouth in terms of spatial planning and the loss of that knowledge base."
