We are ‘bouncing back’ says Cumbria

Redirecting advertising budgets to repeat showings of the TV drama series 'The Lakes' has helped get the message out that Cumbria is 'open for business', following the devastation caused by flooding last November. A recent round of the World Rally Championship had also featured the key marketing message thanks to the Ford Works rally team.

Members of the 4NW Leaders Board heard from Councillor Anne Burns, representing the Cumbria sub-region, that significant progress was being made in the recovery but there will be "massive impacts on the revenue and capital budgets of key agencies locally."

Learning from the Manchester bombing

Councillor Burns reported to the meeting that Cumbria was keen to learn from other similar events to ensure the county was maximising opportunities to regenerate and rebuild parts of the county, in particular how the floods could be used as a catalyst for ambitious plans such as regenerating the Cumbrian west coast. "A recent visit to Manchester to reflect on the city's experience following the 1996 bomb had been valuable and learnings are being built into our recovery project", said Councillor Burns.

Councillor Bill Jefferson, representing the Lake District National Park, praised DEFRA saying: "They could not have been more helpful in the support they have given in the last few months."

The 4NW Board was called on to help continue to lobby for additional infrastructure resources for Cumbria and to promote the message that the county is open for business and 'bouncing back'.
